Gonville & Caius MCR Statement on the UCU strikes.

The following statement was debated and voted on at an Extraordinary Open Meeting of the MCR, on the 26th of February 2018.

“Gonville & Caius MCR is concerned by the effect of the UCU strike on students and believes negotiation is the best way to solve this dispute. However, the MCR notes that Universities UK’s proposals will have a huge impact on both academic and non-academic staff and effectively asks them to pay for a pension scheme deficit that they did not cause. The MCR also notes that Universities UK has not yet shown a willingness to negotiate with UCU, which would end the strike action.

Accordingly, the MCR fully supports UCU’s strike action over the proposed pension scheme reforms and expresses solidarity with those striking. We call on the Master and Fellows to show public support for the strike action and use their influence within Universities UK to lobby for negotiation with UCU in order to end the strike.”
